In 1963 Werner Sellhorn, the advertising manager of the publishing house Volk und Welt, initiated the publishing event "Jazz und Lyrik". In 1964/65 it was performed almost 100 times in many cities in the GDR. Mainly cheerful and satirical poems from the publisher's books were selected for the series of events. Among the reciters was the actor and musician Manfred Krug. The musicians were mostly the Berlin amateur band Jazz Optimists Berlin in Dixieland style and Manfred Krug as a jazz singer. Even in the "Jazz and Lyric" series, guests occasionally took part as singers or reciters. These included the jazz singer Ruth Hohmann, the actors Annekathrin Burger, Angelica Domrose, Eberhard Esche, Edwin Marian and Gerry Wolff, the cabaret artist Gerd E. Schafer, the singer-songwriter Wolf Biermann and the actress and singer Eva-Maria Hagen.

At an event in 1965, Wolf Biermann was denied participation in a performance of "Jazz and Poetry". As a result, the other artists, including Manfred Krug, initially refused to begin the performance.

Gradually, more and more prose texts were included. Therefore, at the end of 1965, the program was renamed "Lyrics - Jazz - Prose". During the runtime of "Jazz und Lyrik" and "Lyrik - Jazz - Prosa" the performances were always sold out. At the turn of the year 1966/67 the series of events "Lyrics - Jazz - Prose" came to an end. For a time there were still events that presented jazz in conjunction with other art forms, such as "Jazz and Dance" and "Jazz & Folksongs".

Elements of the Jazz and Literature series were occasionally picked up as a result. For example, Manfred Krug once again presented poetry and prose at concerts with the Klaus Lenz Band.
